 A Garden of Delight

There is nothing quite like down-on-your-hands-and-knees gardening. My un-gloved hands break up clumps of  dark, cool loam, pull out the weeds and smooth out the surface. I revel in the rich feel of all that dirt, magical dirt. Just add flowers and water!

Planting flowers can turn any frown upside down and turn any lament into pure delight. Works for me, every time. And did you know that talking to the precious blooms, especially the pansies, sets the stage for laughter and enduring memories?

One day a long time ago, my Dad was out planting the annuals in the back garden. He loved gardening, when he had the time to do it, and if he could amuse his three daughters at the same time, well that really was a red letter day. So on this one morning my sisters and I, noses pressed tight up against the window screen, watched Dad plant pansies.

For our entertainment, he talked to his little plants in a voice not unlike that of the late Jonathan Winter's character, Maude Frickert. An old reedy, wheezy voice with a bit of a southern drawl wafted up to the window, "Well aren't you just a little cutie. Let's just get you set up right in here. Oh, such a sweetie. Now what about your other little friends here? They want a special place just like you. Oops, don't you worry about those little wormies. They're your friends too."

We hung on every word, suppressing giggles and jostling each other. What neither we nor Dad knew was that our neighbour, hidden by the fence, was also crouched down in her garden not two metres away from Dad. At some point she went to the fence to investigate the chatter.

Dad kept right on talking to the flowers, "Oh look at you, such a pretty yellow dress."  At some point I guess he must have felt her eyes burning into his back. We watched him ooze his head around to look over the fence. We saw the colour go out of his face. Then we heard a woman's voice say as sweetly and slowly as possible, "Well they are pretty aren't they?"

We slid from our places at the window, hands clutching our mouths, giggles bubbling up inside us. I don't think Dad ever talked to the flowers again, at least while anyone was within earshot.

Do I talk to my pansies? You betcha! And not just the pansies, but the begonias, gazanias, geraniums. and more!

Together we enjoy many a lovely chat come sun or cloud. There are no little faces pressed up against a window screen watching me and no neighbours listening in, but I'm never alone. My Dad is always right there beside me chatting away. It's a family tradition!

It's a Beautiful Day in my Neighbourhood!

Bright, breezy, and cool-ish at 19C; a day good for whatever ails ya!

A great day for a brisk walk in the sunshine, a little putter in the garden and some light yardwork (translation: replenish the birdfeeders and note things that need doing, to be presented to the man as 'suggestions' for his ToDo list).

A great day to open wide the windows and let the fresh breezes blow away the dust and cobwebs. Dusting made easy, at least inside the confines of my being. The house, well that's another story, but as long as the sun doesn't shine a tractor beam across the living room, those irksome, omnipresent particles will remain out of sight. Good enough for me!

Back outside, the grass is thick with green thanks to a good rainfall and the gardens are looking good too.

It's been just over four weeks since my surgery. I'm coping with the fatigue, yielding to the afternoon nap more often than not. My protests against the restrictions and slow pace are easing, sort of, sometimes...maybe even most of the time. And this post has taken 4 hours because I keep getting up to go outside!

Monday Moanings - July 27, 2015

Who perpetrated this outrage?

How can one awake in the morning feeling so energized, positive, excited and grinning from ear to ear and less than eight hours later feel knocked down, dragged out, flat on the sofa, utterly wretched? That was me yesterday. This morning not much has changed. I have been taken hostage by that most awful of demons, the summer cold.

On what is forecast to be the hottest week of the year with temps 30°C and above (humidex at 40+), it's not a week to be laid up with some goo-infesting pestilence.

When the worst of winter rages, it's all well and good to tuck up my runny nose, raw throat, mental fog and vague feverishness under a blankie and sip mugs of honey-lemon tea.

Remember this? Just six months ago...
But under a blazing summer sun such soothing coziness melts away, sizzling into a vapour of misery.
Monday. Moaning. Misery.

Same view this morning
But the garden needs watering. I hauled my reluctant body outside into the warmth - already 27°C at 10am.
The day lilies stretch out for the sunshine...

...as do the gazanias. They love it!

Like me, the begonias will struggle this week.

All will enjoy a cool drink.

I'm "IN" for the day, a frosty glass of orange juice by my side along with a box of tissues and the TV/DVD remote control.
Stay cool this week, folks. And remember to practise "Safe Sun".

Victoria Day Weekend 2015

A 3 day stretch of bbq's, gardens, and fireworks as the folks in these parts celebrate not so much the late great grand queen, as the first long weekend of the summer season. Also known as the May TWO-FOUR weekend, which more and more seems to refer to a case of beer rather than a day in May. This is the weekend that garden centres, hardware stores and gas companies get really excited about as winter weary Ontarians dig out the planting gear and drive to the garden centre to buy bedding plants; haul out the lawn mower and drive to the hardware store to get parts to make it work; and/or drive up to the cottage then drive to the hardware store and garden centre to get parts and plants. Oh, and beer. There's got to be beer. The Two-Four, remember? Wine is also permissible, red is preferable.

And Mother Nature has delivered up a cracker of weekend. Saturday and Sunday offered up a taste of summertime with blues skies and warm temperatures. Perfect for burgers and beer. Oh and yes, yard work! The electric lawnmower has been rolled out of the shed for the first time this season and its whirling blade did a nice number on both the front and side yards. Two of the 40V lithium ion batteries were not quite up to the task but I'm happy to report that the other two picked up the slack and no trip to hardware store was required. I did head out to the garden centre where I bought two hanging baskets of begonias and two containers of geraniums. These all can be sheltered should frost make another appearance as it did this past Thursday morning.

Today, morning clouds have given way to more sunshine, but a shawl of humidity hangs in the air. Still it is comfortably warm and breezy. I'm going to harvest the rhubarb, make a rhubarb crisp for dessert tonight and get a few pies into the freezer.

And just what would the old Queen think of all this? Gary Toffoli of the Royal Royal Heritage Trust, says that,

"In Victoria's time there was, I think, more a sense of communal celebrations...the idea of coming together and having giant picnics with hundreds of thousands of people,"

Well we have the celebration part down pat, so I'd like to think she would be pleased. And May 24 is also the official celebration of Queen Elizabeth's birthday in Canada (It's celebrated in June in England, even though ER II was actually born in April. Go figure!). So banish the moaning, break out the cake and candles along with the gardening equipment, burgers and beer. Light up the sky with shooting stars and roman candles.

Three cheers for Victoria and Elizabeth.

It's bloomin' Spring!

It was a marvellous weekend - warm sunshine, BBQ suppers on the deck, and the simple joy of being outside without coats, boots, mitts and tuques.

The snow tires came off the car, the snow shovel was put away, the snow blower and lawn mower traded priority spots in the shed. The gardens got tidied - the big turnover postponed until I can truly tell the good from the bad, the welcome from the weed. The bird feeders got thoroughly cleaned and re-seeded, and the hummingbird feeder was put out. The usual visitors were quick to welcome the gleaming, full feeders,

along with one not so regular.

Then the lawn raking began. It's pretty mindless stuff; pulling debris from the lawn into piles of beige-brown twigs, leaves, and grass. It's slow work - there is no such thing a quick rake, especially when one has as much lawn as I do. I love being outdoors. I truly do enjoy the mindless time, trolling through the grey matter of my brain, solving all the world's problems and even a few of my own, while the rake does something similar for the lawn. BUT, there is a limit as just how much daydreaming time I can tolerate.

I've reached my limit. Even my back and my arms and my histamines are at their limit. I'm groaning with every movement, sneezing, wheezing and sputtering. The thought of getting out there again is more than depressing, it's paralytic. At this rate, the raking will be done in time for the Fall.

So here I sit, legs tucked up inside my wagon, reluctant to kick off into a new week. I'm going to need a little push and a lot more antihistamines!

But it's bloomin' Spring -
a grand feast of colour, fragrance and sound.

You folks go on ahead. I'll catch up in a bit

A kinder, gentler week...

Phew! My goodness last week was a grueling one on the the world stage! The terrorist attacks in France while grabbing hearts and headlines, also spawned much fear and rhetoric. But then something more remarkable emerged - resolve. National leaders linked arms together to march through the streets of Paris yesterday. I honestly don't care who wasn't there in the front line. I'm betting the French security forces were thankful some of the more notable absentees were not there. The fact that this occurred at all is the amazing bit.

And yet as impressive as this was, the more heartening, the more reassuring thing to my mind was the huge number of ordinary people who walked streets not only in Paris but all over the world in solidarity with the people of France. Now that really was something to help me sleep at night and wake to go about my daily life free, confident and hopeful.

I'd like a kinder, gentler week, if that is at all possible.
No sudden descents into terror and death;
no sharp twists and turns around fear and vulnerability;
just time to breathe deeply, ponder calmly and rest.

Perhaps spend a little time in a garden...

Can we all just have a good week? Please?
